First Off What Exactly Is Shopify

Shopify is a complete e-commerce solution that allows you to set up an online store to sell your goods. Based out of Canada, they have become a world wide powerhouse. This multi-billion dollar company has seen its stock rise tremendously since it’s release date in 2006. And with its rise in stock the platform itself has become more and more fine tuned to user’s needs over the years. Fast forward to today in 2017 and Shopify is your all in one e-commerce platform. Unlike other CMSs, Shopify was created specifically for e-commerce. Meaning everything on that platform is about SELLING online. From showcasing products, to setting up shipping and fulfillment operations. Whether you are selling your own products or drop shipping products from a vendor, Shopify makes selling online extremely easy.

First Let’s Start Off With The Pros Of Using Shopify To Sell Online

Again, Shopify is extremely easy to use. You can have your store literally up and running in about 60 seconds. And to create a great looking store it would only take about 30 minutes. Due to the its popularity and longevity there are thousands of tutorials and step by step videos teaching you how to easily create your online store with Shopify. I have my own step by step Shopify tutorial which you can check out yourself. And because so many people are using Shopify it isn’t hard to get help, tips and so much more when getting started.
Your Shopify site automatically comes with a secure SSL when choosing the basic plan or anything above that. This is extremely important for any online store. I would never recommend having an online store without that green secure bar in the browser. That is because people won’t trust your site for one, and two it slows your site down if you don’t have a secure SSL. And perhaps most importantly, search engines prioritize SSL sites so if you want to be seen your site better be SSL secured.
Finally Shopify has hundreds if not thousands of apps to help you sell and MAKE MONEY. Where as other content management systems have plugins or apps for a wide variety of functions, Shopify’s apps are strictly for e-commerce. On top of that they offer virtual assistance for as low as $10.00 a month through their KIT app.

Now Let’s Look At Some Of The Cons Of Using Shopify As Your E-Commerce Solution

Though the pros certainly outweigh the cons in this case, it is still important to point them out. Shopify is a bit on the pricey side. With a basic plan starting at $29 a month this can add up, especially for those starting off with very minimal capital. Another con is that Shopify’s pages are set up in a way that does not optimize its SEO. Now that is not of extreme importance if all you are doing is selling products. However if you add a blog to your site, or other pages, the url structure is not optimize for search engines. And the final con is that though Shopify makes it extremely easy to create your online store, with that comes limited capabilities. If you are to make an online store with WordPress and WooCommerce for instance, you have a lot more flexibility in terms of the look and feel of your site. It is quite a bit more difficult, but it’s like having a blank canvas to work with. Where as Shopify is more like coloring within pre-made lines.

It is simple and easy to use, they offer fast websites, and they are trusted by some of the biggest names in the industry. I personally use it to sell online and will continue to do so. Of course as with anything you should do your research and experiment with other options.
